As a student at Victoria School of the Arts, I am lucky enough to be presented with many different opportunities very frequently. One of the most recent of them being a trip to New York City. Of course I couldn’t reject the offer when my dance teacher asked me to come along. Yes it was expenxive and something that I am still paying my dear parents back for, but was it worth it? Oh every cent.
A 7 day experience - but only 5 spent in the city - full of dance and sight seeing. Our intinerary was jam packed with amazing classes; Jose Limon class at Capezio studios, a Merce Cunningham class, a class at Alvin Ailey, NYC Ballet, Triangulo, classes at Broadway Dance Centre and Steps on Broadway, AND a Rockette experince. Not only dance studios but 4 shows! La Cage Aux Folles, Memphis and Catch Me If You Can all on Broadway and Feurza Breuta off Broadway.
All very great shows, but I must say, Feurza Breuta was one of the greatest experiences of my little teenaged life. You don’t sit, the stage is constantly moving; you move around to accomidate for the performance. It was like a huge rave, the performers had so much energy, and stamena! At one point of the show there was a hugeplastic barrier over top of the audience’s head covered with a layer of water and girls slip and sliding across it. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. Something that was enjoyable for everyone, especially including the performers.
Out of the 3 three Broadway shows I enjoyed Memphis the least actually. Yes, the dancing and singing was amazing, but I felt the story line was deja vu of Hairspray, and honestly, you can’t beat Hairspray.Catch Me If You Can is a new show on Broadway; I absolutely loved the story line. And last but not least, La Cage Aux Folles. Who woulda thought drag queens could be so entertaining, disturbingly flexible and hilarious all at the same time? I didn’t.
For now I’m exhausted, so I’ll finish sharing my New York stories another time.
